Swiss Design / Made in Japan

What happens when Swiss product design innovation meets the excellence and tradition of Japanese craftsmanship?  Swiss Design / Made in Japan posed an answer and brought fresh perspective to Swiss design. This exhibition was about collaborations between cultures and what each has to offer. Items displayed are designed by Swiss designers or art directors working with Japanese manufacturers and craftsmen.  Also exhibited are a selection of products designed in Japan and made in Switzerland. The pieces embody the values of both countries. Both design cultures share a perception of the essential, of quality, functionality and unobtrusiveness.  Separately, Swiss design culture provides a strong rational aspect, while Japanese design culture materialises ideas that are difficult to verbalise. Swiss Design / Made in Japan focused on everyday objects, and explored how meaningful, sustainable product design looks in today’s globalised world.
Swiss Design / Made in Japan was an initiative of David Glaettli/GDD and the Embassy of Switzerland in Japan. The exhibition took place during the Tokyo Deign Week at a gallery space in the renowned Harajuku District in the centre of Tokyo and also included a Swiss design pop-up shop and a design lounge.
