Tajimi Custom Tiles

Tajimi Custom Tiles is a new brand offering bespoke tiles made in Tajimi, Japan. Tajimi City is the epicentre of the Japanese tile industry, with a centuries-old tradition of craftsmanship and excellence. The majority of tile companies in Tajimi specialise in high-volume production of standard tiles. There remain, however, a number of smaller, highly-specialised manufacturers using a rarely seen combination of alternative production methods and traditional Japanese glazing and firing. Tajimi Custom Tiles works with the most innovative and skilled of these artisanal manufacturers to produce custom-tailored tiles in any size, shape, colour and texture for architects and designers worldwide. Swiss Design / Made in Japan

What happens when Swiss product design innovation meets the excellence and tradition of Japanese craftsmanship?  Swiss Design / Made in Japan posed an answer and brought fresh perspective to Swiss design. This exhibition was about collaborations between cultures and what each has to offer. Items displayed are designed by Swiss designers or art directors working with Japanese manufacturers and craftsmen.  Also exhibited are a selection of products designed in Japan and made in Switzerland. The pieces embody the values of both countries. Both design cultures share a perception of the essential, of quality, functionality and unobtrusiveness.  Separately, Swiss design culture provides a strong r ...

Styling for the KNS Catalogue 2019

The images for the KNS Catalogue 2019 were shot at Karimoku’s large in-house photo studios by the Tokyo based photographer Kenta Hasegawa. The scenography approach evolved from the concept of authenticity in KNS exhibitions and photo shoots; rather than “faking” a real interior instead deliberately highlighting and exploring the improvised character of such temporary settings. Building on the themes of “unfinished” and “imperfect” as well as on the idea of a human-scaled architectural mock-up, only raw construction and DIY materials were used for the set as well as for the styling. This project involved concept design and implementation, selection and direction of the photographer, set desig ...

Salone Del Mobile di Milano, 2019

In celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Karimoku New Standard/ KNS brand,  the stand design for Salone Del Mobile di Milano, 2019 was inspired by a construction site, representing a creative space of change and progress. Building on the themes of “unfinished” and “imperfect”,  the stand contrasted and contradicted the shiny, superficial spaces found at trade shows, deliberately exposing what lies beneath the surface and using it as a design medium. The construction site also represented the ongoing development of the KNS brand. What began as a small project for designer collaborations has grown into an international design brand, active in fields including offices and public ...

Styling for 2016/ Arita catalogue

These photos of all the brand’s 16 porcelain collections were shot in May 2017.  The shoot was for the first conclusive catalogue after the brand launch, and was achieved on a low budget in Arita with photographer Kenta Hasegawa. The challenge for the styling of these images was to show the character,  particularities and functionality of each collection with minimal means. To this end GDD used plywood boards for a background, each painted in a distinct color for each designer.  Props from home and natural lighting rounded out the loo.

IFFT, Tokyo 2018

The stand for Karimoku at the International Furniture Fair Tokyo was designed together with Tokyo based designer Wataru Kumano.  Kvadrat Tokyo had a supporting role, supplying upholstery fabrics, curtains and rugs. For the first time, Karimoku New Standard/ KNS was shown together with other brands of Karimoku.  The stand aimed to give an idea of the wide range of Karimoku’s activity, while giving room to each of the individual brands and identities.  With the use of translucent textiles and minimal individual colour schemes, the stand was loosely separated into different sections, one for each brand.

The department store LOFT in Tokyo’s Ginza district invited Sumida Contemporary to exhibit. We juxtaposed existing products of the Sumida craftsmen with works of their collaborating designers as a teaser for our future products which were in the production pipeline at the time. The strong contrast between the traditional, often handmade craft products and the progressive designs sparked the imagination of the visitors and whetted their appetites for the upcoming collaborative products. Salone Del Mobile di Milano, 2018

The design for the Karimoku New Standard/ KNS stand expanded upon the stand of the previous year. Instead of “faking” a real interior space, as is common at trade fairs, the stand was designed as a life-sized architectural mock-up.  Construction materials were deliberately left unfinished and construction details were used as decorative elements. The design was abstract, consciously set in between fake and real, and was as fake as necessary, yet as real as possible. The volumes of the walls and colours were inspired by abstract minimalism artworks.

Photo production for the KNS Catalogue 2018

These photos were shot in a transformed factory building in Shinjuku, Tokyo by photographer Gottingham. The concept was to playfully unmask the difference between the seemingly perfect, shiny interiors of catalogues and magazines and the reality of actual homes.  To achieve this goal the shoot created both a subjective and objective photo set of each setting by changing the lens, lighting and perspective. For the objective photos, each setting was first perfectly styled and shot on a tripod from a low angle, long focal length and with coordinated lighting. For the subjective photos, the same scene was then shot by hand camera with a ring-flash and wide angle from short distance. Both ki ...

These images where shot at Karimoku’s large in-house photo studios by the Tokyo based photographer Gottingham. In the past few years, we at GDD have photographed Karimoku New Standard in real spaces such as actual apartments and offices. It was important to show that furniture, with its particular character, can fit into all kinds of spaces; eastern and western, new and old, private and public. For this catalogue, we decided to shoot in the artificial space of a stage setting in the studio. The challenge was therefore to stay true to the brand value of authenticity by still showing the furniture in a natural way, but without faking a real interior. For the Interior Lifestyle Fair in Tokyo, a fair which is oriented toward interior accessories, GDD represented Karimoku New Standard in 2016.  The stand GDD produced was characterised by a landscape of monolithic dark grey cubes that subdivided the space into 4 main areas.  These subtle cubes served as podiums without overwhelming the accessories they displayed or obstructing the passage through the stand. The floor and walls of the stand were made of the plain birch plywood which is a consistent design mainstay for Karimoku New Standard exhibitions.  The plywood as a material is honest, neutral and natural, with references to nordic modernism.
